About This Project
The original Victoria Gardens Cultural Center Plaza was constructed in 2005 with the Cultural Center. The Cultural Center is located on the northern edge of the Victora Gardens mall. The plaza faces the mall and shares a strong axial connection back to the Victoria Gardens Town Square event lawn.
Urban Arena was engaged circa 2015 to help with the re-imagination of the Cultural Center Plaza. The City of Rancho Cucamonga sought to re-design the plaza with a stage for events, a shaded seating area for the audience, and flexible seating areas scattered throughout the plaza that would invite mall users and pedestrians alike into the space.
The stage area includes a new backstage storage building, designed by Urban Arena’s architecture team, as well as a large cantilever shade structure which was heavily coordinated with the audio/visual consultant to integrate conduit and lighting infrastructure that would allow the City to setup for performances on a plug-and-play basis. The audience area features a large slide-on-wire tensile shade structure. The shades can be pulled back in more comfortable weather or deployed to provide shade on hot, sunny days. A series of terraced landscape planters with custom wall top wood benches creates flexible seating areas and disguises the grade transition from the plaza back to the mall.
Additionally, Urban Arena was also responsible for designing new signage for the building. Colors were selected for the re-painting and refreshing of the existing Cultural Center building.
